October is very much the start of the new year for me. It is the time of comfort and ritual. This time of year also feels fresh; I’m an October child through and through. I turn thirty-one in just a few short days. We’ll be in Hawaii over my birthday (we leave on Sunday!), but upon our return I’ll be ready for full on fall.

October Goals :: girldust.com

It’s been quite a long while since I’ve shared any monthly goals in this space. It’s a habit I would like to return to. It’s one thing to jot down a list in my day planner, but sharing these goals in a public place makes me a little more accountable. These are my October goals, in no particular order.

Deep clean and dust the house. We’re getting ready to shut ourselves in for the season, and I want everything to be clean and cozy. I’ll be washing all the blankets and picking out some new incense and candles.

Get some seasonally spooky soaps. Okay, so I actually already did this. I ordered a few bars from Cellar Door Bath Supply Co., and I can’t wait for them to arrive. Cobwebs & Candelabras, The Drunken Pumpkin, and Zombie Repellent are on their way! My roommate in Dover was serious about seasonal soaps, and I could always rely on her to bring home giant bags of fun. I’m carrying on in her honor.

Winterize the herb beds. I’m not 100% sure how to do this, but I do know I’ve got to do some major cutting on a couple plants. I brought a huge bunch of sage to a former co-worker yesterday afternoon, and will be giving more to a friend later in the week; hopefully I can find something clever to do with the rest of it.

Visit Salem. This is on my list of maybes. We had the best intentions of visiting last year, but it didn’t quite work out with Tj’s schedule. If not this year, perhaps next. It’s always on my list.

Pick pumpkins. I am going all out with jack-o-lanterns this year, now that I have an entire house and front yard to decorate.

Finish getting my graduate school documents together. Harvard’s program application period opens mid-November, and I want to make sure I have everything ready to go before then. I have an essay to write, but am otherwise ready to go.

Bake rosemary cookies for Halloween. For the last few years, I’ve been working or otherwise too busy on Halloween night, so it just hasn’t been anything special. I’d like this year to be different. Rosemary signifies remembrance, and these simple sugar cookies are eaten to honor the deceased. I haven’t made them since high school. It will be a nice tradition to return to.

Take some gravestone rubbings. It’s been a long, long while since I’ve done this properly, and I have yet to visit any of the local cemeteries. I have an upcoming post all about this, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out this great graphic guide to cemetery symbolism from Atlas Obscura!

Host a girls night. There are a couple local friends I haven’t seen in ages, and I would like to do something before the winter holidays roll around and everyone is too busy. I’m thinking cider punch and Hocus Pocus. I may be able to combine this one with my last goal…

Visit a haunted house/go on a haunted hay ride. This is another one of those seasonal things that’s always on my list. It’s always so hard to work this around everyone’s schedules, but I think with a little careful planning we can pull it off this year.

What are your goals for the month? Or even the season?

  1. I am on the fence about whether or not I need a new hat for winter. I love this hand knit wool toque by MORPH knitwear for SOTBM, and it’s among my top contenders. I’ve been on a break from buying clothes (because I have no real job), and it’s actually made me quite a bit more thoughtful in my purchases. There is definitely more of a desire to make use of what I have. That doesn’t mean I don’t want things (because I do), it just means I’ve become less of an impulse buyer. I think that no longer working at a thrift store has also helped. I will always support buying second hand, but it’s a little silly to buy things you’re not likely to ever wear just because you see them every day. PS do you say toque or beanie? As I’m from northern Vermont, I’ve always been a toque girl. Thanks, dad! ♥
  2. PrAna’s fall 2015 collection is full of some really great, versatile pieces. The Marin pullover is Fair Trade certified and made partially from recycled polyester. This blog is not officially affiliated with PrAna (I wish!), but I love everything about this company. Tj and I both have pieces from them that have officially withstood the test of time.
  3. It’s scarf weather around here! I love this olive and red scarf at Moorea Seal.
  4. Julep’s October collection is totally stunning, as I suspected it would be. I’m a Maven, but I had to opt out of this box simply due to lack of funds (look at me, being a responsible adult). Among my favorites from this collection is definitely Laurel (black with a silk finish). Julep polishes are both vegan friendly and 5-free! If you’ve considered becoming a Julep Maven, now’s a good time to sign up. New subscribers to Julep’s monthly subscription can receive a Halloween Welcome Box for free. Just pay $2.99 to ship. This Welcome Box includes three spooky polish shades and a beautiful black gel eyeliner pencil. When you sign up, use code BOO.
  5. A million times yes to these cozy made-in-the-USA thigh highs!
  6. Haunted Air (a book about Halloween, with a forward by David Lynch) has been on my book wishlist for a while. Amazon just reminded me. Happy October!
  7. Melissa Rand, the artist behind Skullery, makes beautiful resin fantasy crystals and replica skulls. I love her work. Shown here is sphagnum moss embedded in a resin crystal, definitely one of my favorite pieces. Check out her etsy shop for more. I can think of a hundred applications for this lovelies.

The harvest season is upon us. Lots of good things in the air right now. I’ve been enjoying the last few days of sunshine, and the nights are finally getting cold.

  1. LUSH USA just released a bunch of brand new products. Shower Jellies are back! Needles and Pines is right up my alley. If you haven’t used a LUSH Shower Jelly, you’re missing out. They’re lots of fun.
  2. I love love love these little opal earrings. Opal is my birthstone (October children ♥), so it’s one of my favorites. These are simple but feminine.
  3. Blackbird makes some really beautiful incense cones. If you’re unsure or don’t want to make a commitment, they offer samples of all their scents. There are a few I’d like to try out, including Gorgo.
  4. This top is gorgeous. That shoulder detail is maybe my favorite thing ever.
  5. I’m not sure why I’m so into reddish tops right now (maybe because it’s fall?), but I love the Witching Hour Tunic from Sovrin in wine. Give me anything with a hood or a huge cowl neck and I’m happy. I’d probably wear a long line lace bra (like this gorgeous piece from Free People) for a little more coverage and support under this, but I love the look.
  6. The willow charm bangle from Alex and Ani is officially on my wishlist. I feel like that goes without saying. It shall be mine.
  7. I was sorely tempted to purchase a pair of horn tumblers (very similar to these) from a vendor at King Richard’s Faire at the beginning of September, but I decided to wait. I think we probably need to take stock of what we have and use before I make any new purchases.

I feel like it’s been a hundred years since my last Friday Favorites, but it’s actually only been a couple weeks! The short break was nice, though. I am welcoming fall with open arms. How about you?

  1. This velvet cardigan from ModCloth is beautiful.
  2. These hyper-pigmented lipglosses from Nero Cosmetics are 100% cruelty free and vegan. I like Spell Binding for its wearability and Miss Argentina because… Beetlejuice, but I would be happy owning any one of these beautiful shades. Did I mention my birthday is in a month?
  3. Hellooo, hat. This one is also available in burgundy.
  4. This skirt is made of dreams. The bats. Are you kidding me? It’s too good. Seriously, go and zoom in. I’m a size medium. Because you know. Birthday. This is another gem from the ModCloth namesake label!
  5. Fall scents are live at Bath Sabbath! I am all about “November Coming Fire.”
  6. I am loving these golden serpent barrettes from With Care. Someday, when my hair is long again.
  7. I’d like to add these simple gold wire hook earrings to my rotation.

  1. Explorer’s Press just posted a ton of great new stuff in their shop. I am particularly found of this keychain and crescent moon pin.
  2. This simple little ring is just perfect.
  3. These incredible sneakers by Inkkas are inspired by the Japanese artist Hokusai, an Edo period ukiyo-e painter and printmaker (Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji). These are currently being crowdfunded, and I wish I had any money whatsoever because I need these shoes. It’s been a long while since I’ve owned a pair of sneakers. Fellow Japanese art history nerds, it’s up to you to make these happen. Inkkas is a rad company in general, so check out their other stuff if these aren’t quite up your alley!
  4. This navy sweater from ModCloth looks super cuddly. I love the last few weeks of summer, but sweater weather is my favorite.
  5. Coated denim. I’m into it. This pair from PrAna is 79% organic cotton.
  6. Oh hey! New stuff from LUSH. I like the looks of this coffee scrub.
  7. The September Julep Maven reveal included some fall friendly lip shades and finally some polish colors I can get behind. I included this deep red lipstick among my picks (which I paid for entirely with Maven points).  Are you a Maven? What did you end up with in your box this month? If you want to sign up for monthly boxes from Julep, use this link and you’ll receive the Neutrals Welcome Box for free (just pay $2.99 shipping)! The three polish shades in this box are beautiful, and you’ll also get a shimmery plum eyeliner pencil that I love.
